It was super windy last weekend, and I was a bit agitated. I was on my way out to join my family at the playground. But as I was stepping past the wooden gate (I built it myself, and I'm a bit proud of it), I decided to go back and grab a football.
Four steps away from the gate. That was far enough for me to be too far to catch it as the wind slammed it shut.
Well, it did more than that. It ripped off the plank that was supposed to stop the gate. I looked in dismay. I was PISSED.
I bent, grabbed the ball, and walked to the playground, hoping to have a good time with the family. And we did! My daughter and I passed the ball on the way home, which was fun.
But as we arrived at the house, the sight of the gate awakened my frustration. I started going on and on, explaining to my wife that I should have been more careful, and so on.
My daughter paused. She looked at me and said,
"Why are you so upset? It's fixable!"
It's fixable. Of course, it's fixable!
Later that day, we took the car to shop for a new plank. And soon after, my wife fixed the gate.
In life, most things are fixable. Tell and repeat that principle to your kids. Like I did, I'm sure you will reap the benefits next time you break something.
